Welcome to the RSPB January e-newsletter!
Hello Cats
It's Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend and we'd love for you to take part. New this year, we've made it even easier for you to tell us what you see. Our special 'bird counter' will be live on our website over the weekend and allows you to use your laptop, tablet or smartphone to record the birds as you see them.
We've also got an update on our wildlife-friendly farming campaign - thank you for all your support so far. This year is going to be an important one for our forests as the Government decides the future of our public forests.
Count the wildlife that's counting on you
Bird populations are a great indicator of the health of the countryside. Big Garden Birdwatch is important because it helps us keep an eye on the ups and downs of the wildlife where we live. Please help us by spending an hour counting the birds in your garden (or local park) this weekend -25-26 January - then tell us what you saw.
At this time of year, birds require high energy foods to help them through cold snaps. And by providing birds with supplementary food you'll also bring them closer for you to marvel at their fascinating behaviour and wonderful colours.
As we approach the centenary of the birth of public forests, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to guide the way they will look for the next 100 years.
If Government funding is cut the future of our public forests is threatened and the wildlife and people that value it so highly will really lose out.
Back in December we asked you to join our campaign to support wildlife-friendly farming. Your support was overwhelming - thank you. Sadly, the response from Government was disappointing.
RSPB Conservation Director Martin Harper shares with us the results and what it all means for the future of our countryside...
We've teamed up with The Garden Centre Group to bring you a special offer just in time to help you get ready for Big Garden Birdwatch. Pop along to one of their 139 garden centres across England and Wales with your voucher and when you spend £5 or more on RSPB wild bird care you'll get a free six-pack of RSPB suet balls.
There are also a number of half price deals on selected RSPB bird feeders and food.
During January, we've got lots of Big Garden Birdwatch-themed events. We've got a range of activities that will teach you all you could possibly want to know about taking part in the Birdwatch. So whether you want to brush up on your ID skills, or just do your Birdwatch somewhere different this year, come and join us at one of our fun, family events.
